Owning horses is topic of UL Equine Industry Program series

Like the opportunities to race them, owning Thoroughbreds comes in all shapes and sizes. The University of Louisville’s Equine Industry Program speaker series will address those opportunities with a panel of owners at 6:30 EDT on Nov. 12 following the Claiming Crown at Churchill Downs..

UL and Horse Racing Nation are conducting the event in the Starting Gate Suites at the legendary racetrack. HRN Vice President of Content Ed DeRosa will moderate. The panelists are:

• Mary Nixon, a retired Yum! Brands executive who has been involved in several partnerships, including Starlight Racing, which campaigned 2018 Triple Crown champion Justify;

• Joe Kristufek, the analyst for both Churchill Downs Race Track and Fair Grounds Race Course as well as a principal with Brilliant Racing, which focuses on developing young horses as well as relationships with its partners;

• Gary Palmisano Jr., executive director of racing at Churchill Downs Inc. where he helped originate the Churchill Downs Racing Club, which not only gave many people their first experience with horse ownership but also served as a template for other clubs worldwide;

• Tammy Simon, co-owner of 2022 Kentucky Derby starter Barber Road with her husband, Bill, and their WSS Racing. The couple named Barber Road after Tammy’s street in rural North Carolina.
