Owen Almighty, who finished sixth in Tuesday’s Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes, is off the Kentucky Derby trail and will make his next start in the Pat Day Mile (G2) at Churchill Downs.

“He did everything he was supposed to do,” trainer Brian Lynch told the Keeneland media team. “He got up with the leader (East Avenue) at the top of the stretch, but he just doesn’t want to go that far.”

The 1 1/8 miles of the Blue Grass was the farthest Owen Almighty had attempted. The Speightstown colt remained on the Kentucky Derby trail after a gate-to wire win in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2). He has one start at a mile, finishing second in the Iroquois (G2) at Churchill Downs in September.

Owen Almighty was no. 12 on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. If all three international spots are filled, the next runner in is Flying Mohawk, who earned 50 Derby points as runner-up in the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G2).
