Out Post Hangs On at Monmouth Park

Richard Santulli’s Out Post took the lead early and held off the late charge of Darjeeling to capture the $82,000 allowance feature at Monmouth Park on Sunday by a nose.

Trained by Alan Goldberg, Out Post covered the about 5 ½ furlongs over firm turf in 1:02 3/5 and returned $5.20, $3 and $2.40 as the favorite in the field of six fillies and mares.

Darjeeling, who made a hard charge in the lane at the leader, completed the $20.80

exacta and paid $4.20 to place and $3.20 to show. Forever Grateful was another length and a half back in third, good for a $4.80 show mutuel.

“The plan was to put her on the lead and slow the pace as much as possible,” said winning jockey Elvis Trujillo. “In the stretch all I did was kiss at her a little and she opened up. They almost caught me at the end, but my horse had just enough.”

Sunday’s win was the 3rd in 11 starts for Out Post, a 4-year-old daughter of Silver Deputy from the Forest Wildcat mare Secret Wildcat. She has now earned $151,590 for her connections.

Live racing returns to Monmouth Park on Friday, July 23, for the third and final twilight card. Gates open at 11:30 a.m., first post set for 2:10 p.m. One day later, Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra returns to Monmouth for the $400,000 Lady’s Secret Stakes.

Reserved seats are still available for Rachel’s return on Saturday, July 24 and can be

purchased by calling 732-571-5563 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.
