Oscillator Earns First Turf Victory Friday
Oscillator earned her first victory on turf Friday, rallying from well off the pace to overtake J and S Express in the final yards to win the $49,250 feature at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Racing without blinkers for the first time, the 4-year-old Decarchy filly out of the In Excess mare Excessive Susan completed the six furlongs in her fourth career start on grass in 1:09.74.
Trained by Jorge Periban for owner Stephen Campbell, Oscillator, the 5-2 second choice in the field of 10 California bred or sired fillies and mares, paid $7.80, $4.20 and $2.80.
The half-length win under jockey Edwin Maldonado was the third in 12 outings for Oscillator and increased her bankroll to $131,500.
J and S Express, a 7-1 shot who gained the lead from pacesetter Promiscuoussuances early in the stretch, returned $7.20 and $4.40. Always a Chance, who finished three-quarters of a length behind J and S Express, paid $4.40 to show.
Completing the order of finish were Vegas Rules, Tangerine Tickle, the 2-1 favorite, Promiscuoussuances, Luckyvic, Flatter Thecowgirl, Sibella and Ralphy Girl.
With two days remaining in the final Autumn meet, Rafael Bejarano holds a 32-21 lead over Joe Talamo in the jockey race. Bejarano shared the riding title with Edwin Maldonado at the 2013 Spring/Summer meet.
If Bejarano holds on to his advantage, it would be the sixth riding title at Hollywood Park for the Peruvian native while it would be a first for Talamo.
Racing resumes Saturday. Post time for the next-to-last program in Hollywood Park history is 12:30 p.m. Track gates will open at 9:55 a.m. for simulcasts.
The feature attraction on the 11-race card is the second running of the $200,000 Soviet Problem Stakes.
Named for a multiple stakes winner for owner-breeders John Harris and Don Valpredo, the Soviet Problem, which goes as the 10th, is for 2-year-olds bred or sired in California and will be run at seven furlongs over Cushion Track.
