2020 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Order Of Australia was injured Wednesday and has been retired, trainer Aiden O’Brien said on a media teleconference. The 4-year-old Australia colt had been pre-entered for the 2021 Mile.

“He had a bit of a setback this morning and it looks like he won’t be able to travel now,” O’Brien said.

The colt won the Mile last year as a 73-1 long shot.

Order Of Australia had not been able to replicate his Breeders’ Cup form throughout most of the 2021 season. His lone victory came in July at Curragh, where he won the Minstrel Stakes (G2).

Order of Australia most recently ran in the Keeneland Turf Mile (G1) on Oct. 9, where he finished a disappointing 12th.

“It was a small little fracture,” O’Brien said of the injury. “He had to have a pin put in it this morning , but the operation and everything went well.

O’Brien said Order Of Australia will stand the 2022 breeding season.

His departure for the field means that Ivar, who was fourth in last year's Mile and most recently fourth in the Keeneland Turf Mile for trainer Paulo Lobo, will be able to run in the Breeders’ Cup.
