Oliver weighs options for Okla. Derby winner Bracket Buster
Trainer Vicki Oliver is weighing her options for Bracket Buster, winner of last Sunday's Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby.
"He got back on Monday," Oliver said. "He looks good. He's been back on track a couple days."
His next start could come in the 1 1/8-mile Fayette (G3) at Keeneland on Oct. 25, she said.
"We're possibly thinking about maybe the Fayette, or just shutting him down for the year, because we're pretty much out of 3-year-old stakes, bar that race at Zia Park," she said. The Nov. 25 Zia Park Derby "wouldn't give him enough time off to campaign him for the next year. So we'll just see how he does and see how possibly how the Fayette's coming up. And if it's not coming up too tough, we might go there. Or if it is, we might just shut him down for the year and just bring him back for next year."
The Vekoma colt, purchased by BBN Racing for $125,000 as a yearling, drew off to a 3 1/4-length victory in the Oklahoma Derby as the odds-on favorite.
Before that he finished second in the Travers (G1), 10 lengths behind Sovereignty but 10 3/4 lengths in front of everybody else.
"He ran big," Oliver said. "I think a mile and a quarter is a little too far for him. And obviously he ran against Sovereignty, but he made a big effort to try to hold him off. He just couldn't quite hold him off. That horse is just much better than us."
