DerbyWars games heated up last weekend with the excitement of California Chrome's return to the races and Bayern's record-setting win in the Pennsylvania Derby.
George Carman, known as oldhippiedude on the gameboard, ran away with the $20,000 Saturday game and the $10,000 first prize!

"I just discovered Derby Wars a few months ago and this was my first venture into the deep end of the pool," said Carman. "What a great concept!  I threw twenty four bucks into a qualifier and won the darn thing."

What a Great Concept! I Threw Twenty Four Bucks into a Qualifier and Won the Whole Thing!
Carman, from Rutledge, Georgia, picked scoring horses 9 of 13 races, for a total of $87.60. He was $23 ahead of the second-place finisher, George Chute (mrc) of Dedham, Mass. Chute scored $64 to take home the $4,000 second prize.

Carman said of his contest strategy, "I'm a 70 year old, disabled, old hippie and a lifelong racetrack degenerate who  proves that on any given day anyone willing to study the form long enough has a chance to come up with a score. In the twenty grand game, I just tried to avoid swinging at too many wild pitches and play the horse I thought was most likely to win the race. My handicapping is pretty much old school, speed, class and condition. I buy the form as early as possible and read every line, starting with the conditions of the race, as many times as I can before I have  to make selections."

Finishing in third position was Anthony Trezza (youare2020) with $57 for the $2,000 third prize and Alan Klayman (sennap1) of Shelbyville, Kentucky, scored $51.20 to finish in Fourth. These top 4 finishers win a guaranteed spot to play in the $100,000 game that begins October 31!

"I can't wait to get the form for that Halloween Hundred Grander," said Carman.
