Oaklawn scratches Martin entries after 2 fatalities Thursday
Trainer Tim Martin's weekend entries at Oaklawn were scratched by stewards after the deaths Thursday of two horses in his care.
Tyler's Tribe, a juvenile sensation in 2022, and Collins, a 3-year-old gelding who was winless in six starts and had yet to race for Martin, died at the Arkansas track after workouts, Daily Racing Form reported.
"While management investigates the unfortunate fatalities of Tyler’s Tribe and Collins, trainer Tim Martin’s entries during the last weekend of racing have been scratched by the stewards," Oaklawn said in a social-media post. "In the interest of all parties, Oaklawn must take these actions to properly investigate this matter."
Martin had one entry Friday, five Saturday and two Sunday.
Martin told DRF he welcomes the investigation and doesn't object to the scratches.
"I’m saving bags of feed and hay," he said. "If something’s there, I want to find out. I’m just devastated by losing Tyler and Collins."
Martin owned Tyler's Tribe with Martin Lepic. He started his career with five straight wins by an average of about 12 lengths. In the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, he was pulled up and was found to have bled. He was winless in four starts since the Breeders' Cup and bled in at least two.
Collins, a son of Into Mischief, was winless in his first four starts for Brendan Walsh then was moved to Rey Hernandez and went 0-for-2 before joining Martin's barn.
