O'Connell, Vail Triple at Colonial Downs

Colonial Downs’ nine-race card on Wednesday wrapped up with a distance double as two unique mile and a half races were run over the inner Secretariat turf course.

The eighth race, an allowance for three year olds and up, was won in thrilling fashion by favorite Quechee. After losing his lead shortly in midstretch, the three year old gelding finished gamely to prevail by a neck over longshots Lonesome Nun and Mask and Wig. The final time was 2:32.44.

In the ninth race, a maiden special weight for three year olds and up, Forbidden Dancer and James Vail stalked the pace from the inside before shifting out in midstretch and getting up at the wire to win by a head. Heavy favorite Swell Party finished second, with Port Morsbey 1 ¼ lengths behind in third. The race was run in 2:37.57.

Colonial Downs also saw trainer Kathleen O’Connell and jockey James Vail take home three winners on the card. O’Connell had wins in the third and sixth races before pairing up with Vail, who had a riding double in the fifth and sixth races, to take the finale.

Colonial Downs presents a nine-race card on Saturday, June 26, with a first post time of 12:55 PM.
