OBS sales data: Find out which sires have the best, worst ROI
With Ocala Breeders' Sales becoming a growing factor in racing the past few years, we decided to point HRN data analytics at the OBS sales data to see if some trends popped out, and they sure did.
We've wrapped those trends into HRN's OBS Sales Data - a guide to the best sires, consignors and work times that is now available for purchase.
Looking at the sales data here are some interesting stats on sires. These stats include five years of OBS sales data from the March, April and June auctions. The racing data is North American races only, and the 2023 sales crop just turned three in January so many of the 2023 sales horses will continue to earn purse money for several years.
The best sires by ROI
There are several ways to evaluate sires, and ROI is only one measure. Looking at ROI, we can see some lofty stats at the top, although many of these are only represented by about dozen horses that sold-meaning one high performer can tip the scales.
Two sires that stand out at the top are Tonalist and Race Day, who are represented by 27 and 26 sale purchases each.
The sires with the lowest ROI
On the lower end, we should note that several of these sires are younger meaning several of their sales purchases are only three or four and will continue to earn purse money for years to come. That being said, we're assuming the average OBS sales buyer is pretty astute so we will just let the data speak for itself.
Other ways to leverage the data
In HRN's OBS Sales Data - a guide to the best sires, consignors and work times we look at other factors including work times and consignors. Surprisingly, the fastest work times may not lead to the most successful purchases. We'll dive into the work times and consignors on Tuesday when the OBS March sale kicks off. But all of the data is available in our guide at the link above.
