OBS Sales Data: Which consignors have the best ROI?
With Ocala Breeders' Sales becoming a growing factor in racing the past few years, we decided to point Horse Racing Nation data analytics at the OBS sales data to look at trends.
We've wrapped those trends into HRN's OBS Sales Data - a guide to the best sires, consignors and work times that is now available for purchase.
Looking at the sales data, here are some interesting stats on sires. These stats include five years of OBS sales data from the March, April and June auctions. The racing data is for North American races only, and the 2023 sales crop just turned 3 in January so many of the 2023 sales horses will continue to earn purse money for several years. All OBS data is aggregated from data published by OBS.
The best consignors by ROI
Although there are several ways to evaluate sires, ROI is probably a good measure to evaluate consignors. If you're not familiar with sales consignors, they work with the owners to get horses ready for sale to look and show their best. Because 2-year-olds-in-training sales feature timed workouts, in this case consignors are somewhat like trainers in getting sales prospects ready to work quickly and look their best.
The practice of 2-year-old workouts and preparation has come under scrutiny recently as these workouts currently do not fall under HISA's regulations and medication rules.
But back to ROI, a consignor may do a great job for the owner to get a top price at the sale, but it is worthwhile to look at the ROI for the buyer. Here are some of the best ROI consignors in our dataset, based on a minimum of 20 sales.
Consignors with the least ROI
Conversely, the consignors at the lower end of the ROI spectrum include the list below.
In HRN's OBS Sales Data - a guide to the best sires, consignors and work times we look at other factors, including work times and consignors. Surprisingly, the fastest work times might not lead to the most successful purchases. All of the data is available in our guide at the link above.
