'No retirement talk' for Winx ahead of fourth Cox Plate attempt
With the Australian mare Winx still making history, co-owner Debbie Kepitis dismissed speculations of retiring the 7-year-old champion if she wins her fourth Cox Plate at the end of the month, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Kepitis campaigns Winx with Richard Treweeke and Peter Tighe. The Streey Cry daugther won her 28th consecutive race Oct. 6 in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes with trainer Chris Waller and regular jockey Hugh Bowman.
“There has been no retirement talk, definitely not,’’ Kepitis told the Daily Telegraph.
“If all goes well, Winx will run in the Cox Plate, she will definitely go for a spell and then we will see how she is (next autumn).
“As Chris keeps saying, she is racing so well you would be doing her a disservice by retiring her. She is enjoying it and wants to race.’’
Winx left fans and connections on edge in the Turnbull Stakes. She was behind horses in the stretch before Bowman found an opening for her to unleash her rally. As usual, Winx picked her competitors off one by one and hit the wire first.
The Turnbull also marked Winx's 21st Group 1 victory and her ninth consecutive score at the top level. She beat Black Caviar's win streak two races back when she won the Group 1 Winx Stakes, a race renamed in her honor.
