Night Prowler in Good Mettle Out of Dania Beach
Trainer Chad Brown had nothing but high praise for newly-turned 3-year-old Night Prowler following his first stakes victory in Saturday’s Dania Beach (G3), and the gelding was doing well the morning after his strong effort.
Night Prowler, a son of Giant’s Causeway, launched a strong outside stretch rally in the Dania Beach, just getting up at the wire to score a ½-length victory under Javier Castellano over the Bill Mott-trained A Lot. The chestnut improved his record to 2-0-2 from four starts in his first outing as a sophomore, boosting his lifetime earnings to $118,375 in the process from the $58,900 share of the race’s $100,000 purse.
A homebred of owner Paul Pompa, Jr., Night Prowler was a troubled and fast-closing third in his last start, the Pulpit Stakes at Gulfstream Park West, an effort that followed his maiden-breaking victory at Belmont Park on October 17. The 7 ½-furlong Dania Beach was his first start in graded stakes competition.
Although Brown has not yet mapped out a full 2015 schedule for Night Prowler, the Dania Beach left him feeling optimistic about stretching the gelding out in future races.
“I thought he ran really well, especially from that post (9),” Brown said. “He worked out a good trip and he galloped out well, so it looks like he’ll run a bit farther than that. It’s a long year and I don’t know what I’m going to do with him yet, but so far he looks good this morning.”
