Keeping with a six-year tradition, New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program will once again host an entertaining, educational event concurrently with the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. During their annual “Open Barn and BBQ,” the organization will open its barn doors to the public on Friday, April 28, at the conclusion of dressage competition at the Kentucky Horse Park.
This year’s event will be held at New Vocations at Mereworth Farm, located just 7 miles from the Park, where guests will get to tour the nearly completed facility and meet adoptable horses. The evening will include a Southern-style dinner, open bar and guest of honor Valerie Ashker who will share her experience of riding across the country on her retired racehorse. Ashker will also help spotlight and critique some of the New Vocations’ horses in-hand in the John A. Hettinger Arena.
“We are so excited to once again welcome the public to our new facility,” said Program Director Anna Ford. “Last year was an overwhelming success despite the fact that only Phase One of the facility was completed. We look forward to everyone seeing how the farm has changed over the past year and incorporating the educational portion that celebrates the heart and versatility of the Thoroughbred back into the evening.”
The highlight of the evening will be a freestyle demonstration by Lindsey Partridge, 2015/2016 Trail Champion and 2016 Freestyle champion at the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover, and her 2017 Makeover horse. Lindsey will offer insight into her OTTB training methods and why she is so passionate about off-track Thoroughbreds.
“I love OTTBs because they have so many great qualities: They have a great work ethic, are athletic and have a variety of talents,” explains Lindsey. “Thoroughbreds are often stereotyped into certain disciplines or as being hot-headed and crazy. I love showing people that Thoroughbreds are capable of so much more and can be a calm partner.”

Tickets to the Open Barn and BBQ, which will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., include live music, dinner, drinks and demonstrations for $25. The address of New Vocations at Mereworth is 719 Dolan Lane, Lexington. Limited tickets are available at newvocations.org. This event is sponsored by AmWager and Siena Farm; proceeds from the event will benefit New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program, a501(c) 3 charitable organization.
