Must watch: Million-dollar purchase Flightline wins by 13 1/4 lengths
Flightline, a $1 million purchase at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale, served notice in a big way on Saturday when rolling to a 13 1/4-length win in a final time of 1:08.75 for six furlongs in his unveiling for trainer John Sadler.
A 3-year-old colt by Tapit out of the graded-stakes winner Feathered (Indian Charlie), Flightline was hustled to the front by Flavien Prat and posted a sharp opening quarter-mile in 21.59. He gradually extended his lead on the turn through a half-mile in 44.42 and then poured it on in the stretch to win as the 4/5 favorite while being geared down late.
Brutto, a first-time starter for trainer Bob Baffert, was a distant second with Naismith for Richard Mandella checking in third.
Flightline paid $3.80 for owners Hronis Racing, Siena Farm, Summer Wind Equine and West Point Thoroughbreds. The win capped a big day for Siena Farm and West Point. They are also part-owners of First Captain, who won his debut impressively at Belmont Park earlier in the day. The Curlin colt was a $1.5 million purchase at the same Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale as Flightline.
