Music Note wins Beldame

Remember during the summer when there was talk of the Beldame being a race that might lure Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta to Belmont Park?

That never happened.  The $600,000  Beldame for fillies and mares aged 3 and up, was still run on Saturday, the first stakes race of Belmont’s Super Saturday. And it went the way most people figured it would.

Music Note, who won the Grade I Ballerina at Saratoga by 5 1/2 lengths, won the 1 1/8 mile Beldame by 2 1/4 lengths with Rajiv Maragh in the irons. The 4-year-old daughter of A.P. Indy ran the 1 1/8 miles in a time of 1:48.49.   She didn’t challenge the track record of 1:45.40 (set by Secretariat in 1973) but she was impressive in the effort.
