Dortmund's on-again, off-again racing career has met its end, with owner Kaleem Shaw telling BloodHorse.com on Friday he retired the multiple Grade 1 winner to start a stud career.

Per Shah, Dortmund will stand at Bonita Farm in Darlington, Md.

In the care of Art Sherman after starting his career with Bob Baffert, Dortmund last raced April 1, finishing fourth in the Santana Mile Stakes. The 5-year-old son of Big Brown was originally retired after that, then brought back to point toward the Grade 1 Awesome Again run Sept. 30 at Santa Anita.

Dortmund scratched the week of the Awesome Again, with Shah telling BloodHorse.com "we were only going to race if he was training with the same gusto."

The chestnut horse won eight of 16 starts and earned more than $1.9 million. He was at his best as a 3-year-old, taking the Santa Anita Derby before challenging American Pharaoh in the Kentucky Derby, finishing third in a memorable duel that also included Firing Line.
