Mr. Bowling, winner of last year's Lecomte (Grade III) at Fair Grounds, led the field of seven down the backstretch, entered the lane with a narrow advantage over Nicklaus Way and then kicked away from that rival to win the $56,430 Friday evening feature at Churchill Downs by one length.

Trained by Larry Jones and ridden by Alan Garcia, Mr. Bowling covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.00 on the fast main track. It was the second win of the day for Garcia.

Brereton Jones' homebred Mr. Bowling, a 4-year-old dark bay or brown son of Istan, collected $34,200 for Friday's victory and improved his career earnings to $249,948. His record stands at 4-1-2 from 11 starts.

Mr. Bowling returned $16.40, $8.40 and $4.20. Nicklaus Way, under Brian Hernandez Jr., returned $16 and $6 with favored Sabercat another 2 ΒΌ-lengths back in third under Ricardo Santana Jr. and returning $3 to show.
