G. Watts Humphrey Jr.’s durable mare Morticia will try to become a millionaire Friday when she heads a field of 14 fillies and mares and two also-eligibles for the 23rd running of the $150,000 Buffalo Trace Franklin County (G3) going 5½ furlongs on the turf.
The Buffalo Trace Franklin County will go as the ninth race on Friday’s 10-race program with a 5:30 p.m. ET post time. First post Friday is 1:05 p.m.
Trained by Rusty Arnold, who is her co-breeder, Morticia has compiled a record of 25-10-6-5 for earnings of $989,669. She has won eight stakes, two of them graded, including a score in the Spendthrift Farm Ladies Sprint (G3) at Kentucky Downs in her most recent start.
Winner of the Buffalo Trace Franklin County in 2017, Morticia also won the Giant’s Causeway here in April. She could become the fourth horse to sweep the Giant’s Causeway and Buffalo Trace Franklin County in the same year and first since Dyna Da Wyna in 2004.
Tyler Gaffalione will have the mount and break from post position three.
Arnold has said the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint could be an option for Morticia with a nice showing Friday. He also has targeting the race Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint (G3) winner Totally Boss and Leinster, a half-brother to the two-time Breeders' Cup winner Stormy Liberal.
