More than 200 horses: See their new Kentucky Derby odds

Like two college football teams that might be No. 1 in separate polls, Essential Quality and Life Is Good remain the split favorites in the Las Vegas futures for the 2021 Kentucky Derby.

While Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Essential Quality remained the 8-1 favorite at William Hill Nevada, trainer Bob Baffert’s flashy debut winner Life Is Good drifted slightly from 9-1 (actually plus-975) to 10-1 at Circa Sports.

The past week’s Derby points preps influenced the odds. Señor Buscador opened at 35-1 at Circa and 100-1 at William Hill after his victory in Friday’s Remington Springboard Mile. Spielberg, also trained by Baffert, shortened from 75-1 to 35-1 at William Hill while holding steady at 70-1 at Circa.

Twelve 2-year-olds, including Señor Buscador, are making their first appearances in the futures.

Prate (45-1 Circa, 75-1 William Hill). A Beyer Speed Figure of 90 was awarded to this Into Mischief colt for his debut victory Saturday at the Fair Grounds. Trained by Brad Cox, the Juddmonte Farms homebred was clocked at 1:09.81 for the six furlongs, faster than two stakes winners over the same distance on the same card. The 4 1/4-length win met the expectations of bettors who made Prate an 11-10 favorite for the maiden race. Cox sounded as if he was leaning toward bringing Prate back for a top-level allowance race next month at the Fair Grounds.

Cowan (75-1 Circa). A new rule says that only horses that are not on Lasix may collect Derby qualifying points. After closing strong to finish second in the Remington Springboard Mile, trainer Steve Asmussen’s colt was the only horse eligible to keep his points — all four of them — from Friday’s race. Sired by Kantharos, this maiden winner seems to have second-itis, finishing as a runner-up in his last three starts.

Señor Buscador (35-1 Circa, 100-1 William Hill). Now 2-for-2, this deep-closing colt made up more than 12 lengths to win the Springboard Mile by 5 3/4 lengths. His 1:37.87 effort earned $120,000 for owner Joe Peacock and a 93 Beyer for himself. But because he was on Lasix, Señor Buscador could not collect the 10 Derby qualifying points that would normally go with the victory. Trainer Todd Fincher said he would take the Mineshaft colt off the medication if the decision is made to take the Derby road.

Quick Tempo (100-1 Circa, 125-1 William Hill). This front-running Tapizar colt finally got his first stakes victory Saturday on his third try, winning by 1 3/4 lengths as the 4-5 favorite in the Sugar Bowl at the Fair Grounds. He was clocked at 1:10.12 for the six furlongs and got an 86 Beyer. Owned by Michael Faber and trained by Chris Davis, he had finished second last month to Highly Motivated in the Nyquist Stakes on the Breeders’ Cup undercard.

By George (125-1 William Hill). Another colt by Authentic’s sire Into Mischief, he was the fourth betting choice at 5-1 when he set the pace and won his six-furlong debut by 5 1/4 lengths Saturday at Aqueduct. Trained by Christophe Clément, his 1:13.58 time in the $80,000 maiden race got him a Beyer figure of 80.

My Man Bags (125-1 William Hill). This looks like a small-time horse trying to make a big-time impression. Bought last year by his trainer, Paul Aguirre, for $15,000, the Daredevil colt made a winning debut on the undercard of Saturday’s Los Alamitos Futurity. The 5 1/2-furlong victory in 1:04.54 came at odds of 5-1 and at the expense of odds-on favorite Va Va Vegas.

Ricochet (125-1 William Hill). It took four tries for this Tapiture colt to break his maiden for third-year trainer Kelsey Danner. He did it by 8 1/4 lengths in a $25,000 maiden race Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs. What distinguished this victory was that it was around two turns at a mile and 40 yards. He lost by only a head last month over the same course and distance. Before that he was 0-for-2 in sprints, so routes may be his calling card.

Outadore (150-1 Circa). There may have been a leap of faith in trainer Wesley Ward’s starter, who was making his first start on the dirt Friday in the Springboard Mile. He went off the 7-5 favorite on the strength of two sprint wins on the grass and a third-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Close to the lead through the first half of the race, the $290,000 Outwork colt conceded the race in the homestretch and finished fifth.

Overtook (150-1 William Hill). Owner Mike Repole and his partners hope he lives up to his $1 million price tag. On Sunday he lived up to his name. After trailing by 10 lengths early in a showery, one-turn mile at Aqueduct, Overtook circled the field and won by two lengths in his third try to break his maiden for trainer Todd Pletcher. By Curlin out of an A. P. Indy mare, he previously had failed at six and nine furlongs before he delivered in the $80,000 maiden race. His winning time, however, was a pedestrian 1:40.25 on a main track that was rated fast. Less than a half-hour later the same distance was covered in 1:40.04 in a $28,000 claiming race.

Runway Magic (150-1 William Hill). After hitting the board at 30-1 in October, this Runhappy colt came from mid-pack to break his maiden with a 3 3/4-length sprint victory at Churchill Downs. He covered the seven furlongs in 1:23.31. But that was last month. Owned by John Sikura’s Hill ’n Dale Farm, Runway Magic had not opened in futures betting until William Hill posted him during the weekend. This looks like a case of someone asking for a price.

Va Va Vegas (150-1 William Hill). A Baffert prospect attracted attention from bettors before his first race. What else is new? After a British bookmaker opened this Empire Way colt at 40-1 last week, he disappointed bettors who made him a 4-5 favorite in his debut, finishing second to my Man Bags at Los Al. In the last quarter-mile, though, he made up four places and three lengths, suggesting that he might appreciate more distance.

Joe Frazier (225-1 Circa). Cox’s maiden winner looked less like the boxing champion and more like the former manager of the New York Mets by the same name when he withered to a sixth-place finish in the Springboard Mile. After a sprint victory in his first start, the Distorted Humor colt set the pace before finishing third at 1 1/16 miles last month at Churchill Downs. Friday’s result might suggest he is destined for more modest company next year.
