Drumette’s first three foals to race are all winners, and she’s in foal to Grade 1 winner Mastery. But what’s not why she commanding a $1.85 million winning bid on Sunday evening at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale in Lexington, Ky.

Among those three winners is Monomoy Girl, the soon-to-be champion 3-year-old filly who won Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff, capping a season in which she hit the wire first in all seven of her races.

Drumette is a 10-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes. Gainesway consigned her, and Bridlewood Farm purchased.

"I was hoping to buy her for $1.5 (million), and my friend Bobby Flay had to bid against us," said Bridlewood's general manager, George Isaacs.

After foaling Monomoy Girl, Drumette was bred back to Tapizar. That 2-year-old, Cowboy Diplomacy, reached $175,000 at auction and hasn’t yet started. Drumette had a Palace Malice colt in 2017 and Shackleford colt in 2018.

"A 10-year-old mare in foal to a nice young stallion," Isaacs said. "Personally I thought she was underbred, but we'll darn sure breed her up next year. She's a beautiful mare and hopefully we'll get some nice healthy goals out of her in the future.

"Hopefully we can breed a champion and sell a few good ones too."

Among other fireworks early in the single-day Fasig-Tipton session was the sale of the 4-year-old Pretty City Dancer. A Grade 1 winner via a dead heat in the Spinaway Stakes (G1), she hammered for $3.5 million. Pretty City Dancer is in foal to Medaglia d’Oro. Stroud & Coleman put in the winning bid for Godolphin.

Later, the Grade 1 winner Salty, often a rival of champion Abel Tasman, fetched $3 million. The 4-year-old Salty was last seen on Kentucky Derby weekend winning the La Troienne (G1). Don Alberto Stable purchased.

“We didn't expect that,” said Don Alberto’s Liliana Solari. “But when you like something that much, you like to keep it. We're trying to do our best here to have the best mares and importantly the best stallions."

The Grade 1 winner American Gal also sold for $3 million. The 4-year-old by Concord Point won the Test (G1) at age 3 and came back this year to win the Humana Distaff (G1) for trainer Simon Callaghan and Kaleem Shah. Mandy Pope purchased her Sunday.
