Monmouth Park lists possible Haskell Invitational contenders
Reigning 2-year-old champion Good Magic's anticipated top challenger in the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational on Sunday, July 29, is likely to come from Bravazo.
Host track Monmouth Park on Saturday confirmed the D. Wayne Lukas-trained colt, who was second in the Preakness Stakes while running in all three Triple Crown legs, is among those probable to run in the 1 1/8-mile summer feature.
Other probable runners include Reride, a late invitee who was third in the UAE Derby (G2), local stakes winner Navy Commander and Roaming Union, another New Jersey-based 3-year-old. Each of Lone Sailor, Mr Freeze, Core Beliefs and Flameaway are said to be possible.
“No question in my mind that the horse to beat is Good Magic,” said Kelly Breen, who trains Roaming Union. “...It’s the Haskell, it’s my home track and we have a 3-year-old who is ready to run. I’m all in.”
NBC will broadcast the Haskell from 5-6 p.m. ET.
Consider the list of contenders in flux -- and larger than originally thought -- with Triple Crown winner Justify no longer under consideration. Trainer Bob Baffert took this race in 2015 with American Pharoah but hasn't been able to return Justify to the work tab since his June 9 Belmont Stakes victory.
