Monmouth Park cancels Friday card because of extreme heat

Monmouth Park cancelled its eight-race card scheduled for Friday because of excessive heat.

Shortly before noon EDT on Friday, the temperature in Oceanport, N.J. was 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The forecast for Friday called for a high temperature of 91 degrees and heat-index values of 101 with a chance of severe thunderstorms.

Racing is scheduled to resume on Saturday, with the Tyro Stakes for 2-year-olds at five furlongs on the grass headlining the card.

The NWS forecast for Saturday called for a high of 90 degrees with heat-index values of 101 and a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Colonial Downs delayed its Friday card until 5:30 p.m. EDT. The NWS forecast called for a high temperature in New Kent County, Va., Friday of 97 degrees with heat-index values of as high as 110.
