Monmouth Park Barn Notes - October 3
After an impressive maiden score on Sept. 15, Lorjim is back in this Saturday as he steps into stakes company for the $60,000 Jersey Juvenile at six furlongs.
“He ran real well in his debut,” said
owner/trainer/breeder Eddie Broome. “I was impressed. His works
weren’t all that spectacular, but he really showed
up in the afternoon.”
A 2-year-old gelding by Wildcat Heir from the North Prospect
mare Zul, Lorjim comes from a family where winning seems to come
naturally. His mother raced seven seasons, racking up a record of
17-18-5 and earning $305,640 before being retired in
2000. Since then she has proven just as much a standout in the
breeding shed, having thrown eight foals, all winners.
"She’s been a great broodmare,” Broome said. “She’s getting up there in years, so I breed her every other season. She’s barren this year, but has a weanling on the ground by King Puma and we’ll breed back to that sire.”
As for Lorjim this Saturday, “He’ll need to step up,” admitted Broome. “But he’s a Jersey-bred. I love the Jersey-bred program and support it every chance I can. He had a nice breeze since he won and should be ready for this.”
Lorjim will break from post two in the Jersey Juvenile with Samuel Camacho Jr. in the irons. He’ll face three fillies to his outside, including Stakes winner Flay Mignon, and colt Charleymillionaire to his inside.
The Jersey Juvenile, final stakes of the 2013 racing season, goes as race five on the 10-race program.
