Monday works: 13 graded-stakes winners are on the tab
Gold Phoenix worked Monday morning for the first time since winning the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap on Aug. 30.
The 7-year-old gelding by Belardo went four furlongs in 49.2 seconds on the synthetic track at Santa Anita, 16th fastest of 28 at the distance.
Trained by Philip D'Amato, Gold Phoenix also won the Del Mar Handicap in 2022, 2023 and 2024, but he is 0-for-5 between last year's race and this year's.
Gold Phoenix earned a berth in the Breeders' Cup Turf with the win. He was fourth in that race last year and in 2023 and 10th in 2022.

This was her first work since her last race. In her last start she won the Ballerina (G1) going seven furlongs on the main track at Saratoga on Aug. 23 for trainer Bob Baffert.
Speed Boat Beach (Bayern), a Grade 1 winner (2023 Malibu), worked five furlongs in 58.4 seconds at Santa Anita on Monday morning. It was the fastest of 39 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Del Mar. In his last start he placed fifth in the Pat O'Brien (G2) going seven furlongs on the main track at Del Mar on Aug. 23 for trainer Bob Baffert.
Straight No Chaser (Speightster), a Grade 1 winner (2024 Breeders' Cup Sprint), worked five furlongs in 1:00.0 at Santa Anita on Monday morning. It was the fifth fastest of 39 works at the distance. His previous work was 16 days ago going four furlongs at Del Mar. In his last start he placed eighth in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G2) going about six furlongs on the dirt at Meydan on April 5 for trainer Dan Blacker.
