Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos underwent colic surgery Tuesday at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute veterinary clinic in Lexington to correct a twisted bowel, according to the owner of the farm that stands the 13-year-old stallion.
Monarchos is the sire of 2009 champion female sprinter Informed Decision.
Charles Nuckols III of Nuckols Farm in Midway, Ky., said the surgery “consisted of straightening multiple twists of the small intestine, but there was no sectioning required and, barring any complications, the 13-year-old stallion is expected to recover and begin servicing mares again in three to four weeks.”
