Moment of Delight Wires Sunshine Millions Distaff Preview
Moment of Delight, who gamely won Saturday's $100,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff Preview at Gulfstream Park West, has seemingly done it all.
Fourteen of her 17 starts have come in stakes, she's won three of them and placed in five others, and she's won sprinting and going long while under the shedrows of retired trainer Bill Kaplan and now Stanley Gold.
"She's done quite a bit," said Adam Lazarus, managing partner of Pinnacle Racing who along with Norman Stables owns the 4-year-old filly. "The thing that's missing from her resume is hitting the board in a graded stakes race and we've got to figure out a way to do that, without interrupting the Sunshine Millions (Jan. 21 at Gulfstream Park) and providing she's doing well.
"It's Stan's call, but from a business standpoint, we've got to figure out a way to get her graded black type."
Meeting seven others in Saturday's seven furlong Distaff including graded-stakes placed You Bought Her and the stakes winners R Girls a Charmer and R Kinsley Doll, Moment of Delight went right to the front under jockey Eddie Castro and never looked back, setting fractions of :22/64, :45.06 and 1:10.01. Despite rallying along the rail down the stretch, You Bought Her couldn't catch Moment of Delight, who came home in 1:22.65 and a half-length in front of You Bought Her.
"We broke well and she fought all the way down the stretch," Castro said. "She's a nice filly."
Moment of Delight, who is owned by a group of 15 under Pinnacle's partnership program, has now earned more than $400,000. Fourth in the last year's Rampart (G3) and sixth in the Azalea (G3), Moment of Delight has won two of three starts since being transferred to Gold.
"She's a super filly to have...and Stanley is an amazing trainer," Lazarus said.
