Moment of Delight Takes White Pearl by a Neck
In a very tenacious effort, Moment of Delight hung on for a neck victory in the $60,000 White Pearl Stakes, a supporting stakes to Saturday's $200,000 Royal Delta (G2), over the fast-charging Distinta. It was another three-quarters of a length back to the third-place finisher, Bodacious Babe, in the seven furlong dirt race for fillies and mares.
Moment of Delight, under Luis Saez, broke a bit tardily but still managed to secure the lead from her inside post after the gates opened, and reeled off fractions of 22.71, 45.39, and 1:10.79 while under pressure from Fusaichi Red. The 5-1 Distinta closed with a tremendous amount of energy but ran out of ground.
Moment of Delight provided Saez with his third win of the afternoon, and a sweep of the stakes. Earlier on the card, Saez piloted Curlin’s Approval to a runaway score in the Royal Delta.
Trained by David Fawkes for Pinnacle Racing Sable and Norman Stables, the 4-year-old Moment of Delight returned $4.60 as the favorite in the eight-horse field.
Moment of Delight, a daughter of A. P. Warrior, was coming off a third-place finish in the Sunshine Millions Distaff at Gulfstream Park Jan. 21.
“This is the race we expected last time, and she just kind of struggled the whole way around,” Fawkes said. “Today, she trained up to the race better; we got her out of the gate better; she was kind of in control the whole race.”
