Moment Is Right, the winner of the Astoria Stakes last June 4 at Belmont Park for trainer Wesley Ward, will make her first start in California in the $75,000 Surfside Stakes Sunday at Los Alamitos.
Offered at six furlongs for 3-year-old fillies, the Surfside, named for the champion 3-year-old filly of 2000 trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas for Overbrook Farm, is the eighth of nine races. Post time Sunday is 2 p.m.
The final day of the second week of the Spring meet also includes a Los Alamitos logo drinkware giveaway – one per paid admission while supplies last.
Owned by Ten Broeck Farm, Inc. and now in the stable of Simon Callaghan, Moment Is Right won the Astoria less than three weeks after an easy debut score at Gulfstream Park.
A daughter of Medaglia d’Oro and the Vicar mare Rite Moment, Moment Is Right finished 2015 with a pair of fourth-place finishes. Idle since finishing two lengths behind Sheik of Sheikhs in the Juvenile Dirt Sprint last Oct. 31 at Keeneland, the Kentucky bred has earned $164,100.
Owned by a partnership that includes M Racing, Gatto Racing LLC and Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, Surfside Tiara hasn’t raced since finishing seventh of nine in the Grade I Starlet last Dec. 12 at Los Alamitos.
A Scat Daddy filly out of the More Than Ready mare Starlight Tiara, Surfside Tiara has two wins in six starts and earnings of $102,600. She is a stakes winner, having taken the ungraded Anoakia last Oct. 11.
Uptown Twirl returns to dirt for Hronis Racing LLC and trainer John Sadler after finishing fifth of nine in the Sweet Life Stakes on turf Feb. 14.
Purchased for $630,000 at a 2-year-old sale in March of last year, the Twirling Candy filly out of the Cat Thief mare Sambuca Classica is 2-for-6 with earnings of $89,714.
Code Warrior cuts back in distance after finishing a well-beaten seventh in the Grade III Santa Ysabel dominated by the undefeated Songbird March 5.
Trained by Manuel Badilla for J.C. Racing Stable, the daughter of Society’s Chairman and the Runaway Groom mare Lady Natalie has won three of six and earned $119,595.
Code Warrior’s wins have come over the Tapeta surface at Golden Gate Fields, including stakes victories in the Golden Nugget – versus males – last Nov. 7 and the Golden Gate Debutante Nov. 28.
My Dynamo, who finished last in the Santa Ysabel, will be looking for her third win for owners Rusty Brown, Phil Lebherz and Alan Klein.
Trained by Jeff Bonde, the Discreetly Mine filly out of the Doc’s Leader mare Dyna Da Wyna has banked $94,395 in seven starts. Her latest win came in an optional claimer last Nov. 12 at Del Mar.
Scheduled post time for the Surfside is 5:28 p.m.
