Mohaymen's brother, Kingly, wins California Derby for Baffert
Trainer Bob Baffert added another derby win to his resume on Saturday when Kingly — full brother of the Grade 2 winner and Kentucky stallion Mohaymen — held off the late-running Visitant to win Golden Gate Fields’ $100,000 California Derby.
Baffert had Mario Gutierrez in the irons for the 1 1/16-mile test, going the same distance as Kingly did last time when second to Anothertwistafate in the El Camino Real Derby, also over the synthetic at Golden Gate.
Saturday’s score came thanks to a patient ride, with Kingly sitting five lengths back of loose leader Erlich, who opened up with fractions of 23.40 and 46.82 before backing up quickly through the far turn.
“It worked out perfect,” said Gutierrez, who hustled Kingly between horses to stalk after “he broke a step slow out of the gate. I was able to position him into a very nice spot in the first turn. From that point on, I was just waiting for the end to ride him.”
Kingly went on to finish up in 1:42.73 on a stakes-packed “Gold Rush Weekend” card.
More Ice ran on for third while Angelo’s Pride filled out the board. Sparky Ville, winner of the San Vicente Stakes (G2) in his prior start, was a no-show when stretching to two turns.
Kingly, by Tapit and out of the Dixie Union mare Justwhistledixie, is campaigned by Clearview Stables and RAC 04 Raci. This victory marked the colt’s first since he broke his maiden Dec. 1 on debut at Del Mar.
Overall, Kingly is now 4: 2-2-0.
