Grade 2 Nashua winner Mohaymen is on track for the Grade 2, $300,000 Remsen on Cigar Mile Day at the Big A, according to his trainer, Kiaran McLaughlin.

The $2.2 million yearling purchase debuted successfully on September 19 at Belmont, taking a six-furlong maiden race by a half-length before coming back to win the one-mile Nashua at Aqueduct by 1 ¾ lengths as the even-money favorite.

"He broke a little slow [in the Nashua] and was sixth early down the backside, but he was a little bit keen so [jockey Junior Alvarado] pulled him out and moved up wide around the turn. He won nicely," said McLaughlin, who trains Mohaymen for Shadwell Stable.

With only two starts under his belt, the gray son of Tapit will race around two turns for the first time in his young career on Saturday and comes back just 24 days after taking the Nashua.

"He's doing great," said McLaughlin. "He just had one work in between because he's back a little quick. We've taken him to the gate a couple times because he was naughty at the gate [in the Nashua]. The first time he was great but the second time he got a little difficult. He reared up in the paddock when he was being saddled and he was funny at the gate, so we've taken him back to the gate two or three times and he's been really good."

Having raced in the clear for the most part in the Nashua, McLaughlin put an emphasis on teaching his young pupil to sit behind horses if the situation demands in the Remsen.

"We worked him behind dirt the other day, behind two horses," he said. "He took a lot of dirt but did not react at all. We did it just in case; you have to do it at some point. At least we don't have to worry about him if he has to sit fourth in the race."

McLaughlin is currently undecided, but may have another runner on the Cigar Mile Day program with a perfect record. The trainer is considering entering Marking, 2-for-2 in his career and a recent allowance winner at the Big A, for the Cigar Mile, but at this point is leaning against it as his next possible start.
