Mode Celebrates First Training Win

Emily Mode, 27, called her first training win, accomplished in Friday’s nightcap seventh race with Economy of Motion ($33.00). “An unbelievable rush.”
You could see it in the joy she showed in the winner’s circle afterward. And you could hear it in her voice over the telephone Saturday morning.
“Economy is so special,” Mode said of the 2-year-old, California-bred daughter of Pleasantly Perfect. “She’s really mine, so to speak. I didn’t claim her, nobody else has trained her. I felt, deep down, that she would be my first winner. But then there’s always some self doubt.
“But (Friday) it seemed like everybody came down for the race – my mom and grandmother, several other people – and it was the horse’s groom’s birthday. It all came together.”
Mode grew up a horse fancier in Fullerton, started out as a hot walker at San Luis Rey Downs and embarked on a four-year career as a jockey in 2007. She rode, infrequently, in Arizona, Northern California and Washington.
She took out her training license in 2011 and met, through a mutual friend, Dr. Jerry T. Raskey, a Lake Elsinore-based chiropractor who owns Economy of Motion and three others of the five horses in Mode’s stable.
The victory by Economy of Motion, under Alex Bisono, came in her sixth career start. It was a surprise to the bettors, triggering a $104,772 carryover in the Pick Six for today. It wasn’t nearly as surprising to Mode, however.
Economy of Motion had been last of nine, beaten 13 lengths, in a one-mile maiden event on turf in her Del Mar debut on August 12, racing wide while rating off the pace early, then weakening. It didn’t look like much on the past performance line, but Mode said she considered it a good effort.
Shortening to 5 ½ furlongs, Economy of Motion went straight to the lead and drew off to win by 6 ½ lengths. “I know it was a speed-biased track, but to see here pull away like that was an unbelievable rush,” Mode said.
