Jack Swain III’s Miss Ella emerged from a three-horse scramble in midstretch to win the 30th running of the $250,000 Adena Springs Beaumont (G2) for 3-year-old fillies by 2½ lengths over Divine Dawn before a Sunday afternoon crowd of 19,008.
Earlier on the Sunday program, Sheep Pond Partners’ Lady Eli extended her undefeated career streak to four by winning the 27th running of the $125,000 Appalachian (G3) Presented by Japan Racing Association for 3-year-old fillies by 2 ½ lengths.
In winning the Adena Springs Beaumont, Miss Ella picked up her first 10 points toward qualifying for the $1 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1). The Oaks is limited to the top 14 point earners that pass the entry box, with the current cutoff line being 40 points.
Trained by Graham Motion and ridden by Rajiv Maragh, Miss Ella covered the Beard Course distance of seven furlongs, 184 feet in 1:28.11 over a fast track. It was the first victory in the Adena Springs Beaumont for both Motion and Maragh.
Fantastic Style set the early pace and led the field of seven through fractions of :22.87 and :46.11 with Divine Dawn in closest pursuit and Miss Ella racing third. The top three remained unchanged until the top of the stretch when the trio hooked up on even terms.
Fantastic Style was the first to back out at the eighth pole and Miss Ella shook clear of Divine Dawn at the sixteenth pole to pull away to her second win in two starts.
A Keeneland sales graduate, Miss Ella is a Kentucky-bred daughter of Exchange Rate out of the Woodman mare Sweet Tune. Her earnings ballooned to $174,000 with Sunday’s $150,000 check.
Miss Ella returned $21.40, $10.40 and $5.60. Divine Dawn, ridden by Kerwin Clark, returned $8.60 and $4, with Fantastic Style hanging on for third another length back under John Velazquez and paying $3.20 to show.
Completing the field in order were Zeven, Sweet Success, favored Delightful Joy and Harlan’s Destiny.
