Mendassity set a turf track record while the 1-2-3 finishers in today’s $42,000 allowance feature at Laurel Park were all long shots.

Trained by Hugh McMahon and ridden by J D Acosta, Mendassity led from start to finish and covered the 5-1/2 furlong distance in 1:01.25, clipping .02 of a second off the turf course record. Mendassity beat 73-1 shot Yes It’s Persia by ¾ of a length for the win, while 7-1 Proficient finished third.

The payoffs were generous. Mendassity paid $79.80 to win and set off a $1806.20 exacta and a $6280.50 triple. The superfecta, with Wildcat Queen taking fourth, came back $68,035 for $1.

Mendassity, who was notching her second lifetime win, was dismissed by the bettors because she had failed to score in six previous starts on the turf.
