Jockey Luis Saez nursed Mean Mary through comfortable fractions on the lead before pulling away in the stretch for a 5-length victory in Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000 La Prevoyante Stakes on Gulfstream Park's Pegasus World Cup undercard.

Trained by Graham Motion for owner Alex G. Campbell Jr., 4-year-old filly Mean Mary was making only her fifth career start and first in stakes company.

Saez turned in a smart ride, allowing the front-running filly to coast through slow early fractions while unchallenged throughout in the 1 1/2-mile turf event.

"Luis came into the paddock and he said he was going to ask her away from the gate," Motion said. "I said, ‘Luis, you’re not going to have to ask her, she’s going to be on the lead.’ He did a beautiful job and he slowed it right down.

"When they went :17, I was feeling pretty good because I didn’t think the distance would be a problem.”

Lady Paname, the 6-5 favorite, was second, with Touriga finishing third.

Mean Mary (5-2) completed the trip in 2:28.36.

“I looked behind me at the three-eighths [pole] and there were two or three guys I saw right there and I still felt comfortable because I had a lot of horse," Saez said. "I knew she was going to take off when I came to the stretch. She switched leads and she made it look easy.”
