May One Wins Fair Grounds Feature

Joseph Haddad’s May One, a 5-year-old daughter of Waquoit trained by Mike Stidham, responded gamely when roused by Fair Grounds’ current leading rider Jamie Theriot and proved best by three-quarters of a length in Sunday’s featured 1 1/16-mile $47,000 event for fillies and mares over the Stall-Wilson turf course.

The winner paid $20.80, $11.80 and $6.80, toured the distance over the grass course listed “good” in 1:48.89, and increased her career earnings to $144,330 with her 10th victory in 38 lifetime starts.

Sam-Son Farms’ Wild Strike closed boldly alongside the winner in the stretch, could not match that one but was clearly second-best, finishing a length and a half to the good of John Chandler’s Frances Gardner. The runner-up paid $8.80 and $5.20, while the third-place finisher returned $4.40

Douglas Devenport’s Catnandu, who set the early pace with splits of 25.36 and 51.86, weakened in the final furlong to finish fourth, a head farther back.

Following three days of simulcasting, Fair Ground will resume live racing Thursday with a first post time of 12:40 p.m. for a nine-race program.
