Maximum Security back to work with two race options

In his first workout since blowing out a couple furlongs the morning of the Kentucky Derby — that was an old school move by trainer Jason Servis — Maximum Security returned to the work tab Wednesday at Monmouth Park with another customary drill ordered by the conditioner.

The son of New Year’s Day breezed a two-minute mile at his New Jersey base and, according to the Asbury Park Press, kicked through a final furlong in 13 seconds before galloping out 1 1/8 miles in 2:13. The clockers officially assigned him a half mile in 53.80 seconds.

"Everything was good out there," Servis told the paper.

It’s undetermined whether Maximum Security will race again before Monmouth’s July 20 Haskell Invitational (G1). The Pegasus Stakes runs June 16 as a local prep for it.

Of course, when last seen the colt hit the wire first in the Kentucky Derby, was disqualified in historic fashion and exited the race with a few abrasions on his hind legs, connections said, requiring an easy return to training.

While Maximum Security is finished with the Triple Crown series, owners Gary and Mary West could be represented by the Bob Baffert-trained Game Winner in the June 8 Belmont Stakes. In the meantime, they’ve filed a lawsuit aimed at overturning that Derby disqualification.

Maximum Security has officially won four of five starts, going from a $16,000 claimer on debut to winner of the Florida Derby (G1) before a controversial finish at Churchill Downs.

“He’s a Cinderella story," Servis said over the weekend when parading Maximum Security at Monmouth Park, "He’s 5-for-5 in my eyes."
