Maximum Security Saratoga-bound; Joevia done for the year?
TVG.com Haskell Invitational (G1) winner Maximum Security is “a little tired but otherwise doing fine,” trainer Jason Servis said on Wednesday morning.
Though he has yet to map out a plan for his star 3-year-old, Servis said Maximum Security would likely ship to Saratoga on Friday.
Maximum Security earned a hard-fought 1¾-length victory over Mucho Gusto as the 4-5 favorite in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million race. Next up could be the Aug. 21 Travers Stakes (G1), while Parx Racing hosts its Pennsylvania Derby (G1) on Sept. 21.
Via the Haskell, Maximum Security earned a "Win and You're In" spot to the Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita Park.
Servis Sunday described the benefits of Saratoga as being "a little cooler up there and sometimes the change in barns and in scenery will maybe get a horse to cycle around and do even better. I’ll send him up and see how it plays out. But he has to be doing really good to run in the Travers, which he could.
"I’ve had my assistant call me many a time and say, ‘Oh my God. This horse in two weeks here is a different horse.’ So we’ll see what happens.”
Meanwhile, Joevia, who scratched from the Haskell the day of the race due to a foot issue, may be done for the year, trainer Gregg Sacco said, indicating the recovery time would probably preclude Joevia from running in the Travers and Pennsylvania Derby.
“The best thing to do may be to stop with him and look forward to next year,” Sacco said of Joevia, who was third in the Belmont Stakes after winning Monmouth Prk's Long Branch Stakes on May 12.
