Maximum Security No. 1 on HRN's ranking of active horses
It has been a roller coaster ride this year for Maximum Security, but he's positioned to finish the season ranked as the No. 1 horse in training.
That's according to Horse Racing Nation's listing of top active horses. Users can sign up for free, visit a horse's page and assign a rating 1-10. Collectively, they average out to Maximum Security leading the way with an 8.73.
The second-ranked colt -- Omaha Beach -- evidences the popularity of the 3-year-old division and the potential a Jan. 25 matchup between the two would have had if they'd gone on to meet in the Pegasus World Cup (G1).
First, Omaha Beach is favored in Saturday's Malibu Stakes (G1). He'll make the Pegasus his final career start, while Maximum Security will seek greater riches overseas in light of the race's purse cut from $9 million to $3 million.
A credit to her longevity, Grade 1 turf horse Rushing Fall is ranked third, the Japanese filly Almond Eye fourth and Roy H, twice a champion sprinter, fifth.
Those on the list likely benefited from the recent retirements of runners like Bricks and Mortar, the anticipated Horse of the Year who won each of his 2019 starts. But there are also some surprises in the rankings, which list down the top 250 horses in training.
High-profile contenders in the Triple Crown series produce more visits to their respective pages, explaining why their ratings go both ways. Some are logically too high and others likely too low.
But as we reset for the holidays, we wanted to call some attention to this list. It's up to readers to sort it out, using this page as a resource to determine which active horses deserve recognition.
So, who are you voting up into the new year?
