Math Wizard breezed a half-mile in 46.48 seconds Saturday at Gulfstream Park in preparation for a planned start in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Nov. 2.
Saturday’s workout with Edgard Zayas up was the second since the Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained 3-year-old colt’s 31-1 upset victory in the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (G1) at Parx Sept. 21. He breezed three furlongs in 35.80 seconds Oct. 13.
“He’s worked somewhat similar to how he worked before Pennsylvania,” Joseph said. “Everything’s gone on time, everything’s gone good.”
Math Wizard is scheduled to breeze next Saturday at Gulfstream before shipping to Southern California Oct. 29.
Joseph said the services of a jockey have yet to be acquired for Math Wizard, who was ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. in the Pennsylvania Derby.
Joseph claimed Math Wizard for $25,000 for owner John Fanelli out of an 18 ½-length victory at Gulfstream Park Jan. 31. The son of Algorithms went on to finish fourth in the Wood Memorial (G2), second in the Ohio Derby (G3) and third in the Indiana Derby (G3) before pulling off his Pennsylvania Derby upset.
