Maryland’s Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford toured Laurel Park’s renovated facility Saturday afternoon to kick off Winter Carnival in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Rutherford toured the many renovations at Laurel and visited the fundraiser for jockey Fray Martinez, who was diagnosed in December with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Martinez, 21, and his wife, Yelitza, are expecting their first child this spring. Rutherford joined the bone marrow registry.
Rutherford spent more than an hour walking the facility, meeting patrons, and having his picture taken with first-race winner, Bissinger, trained by Tim Ice.
“I’m quite impressed with the facility as it is but even more so with the plans for expansion and really incorporating the community, the neighborhood, and the new train station,” Rutherford said. “I think it’s wonderful for the state and this whole area and region. I think it’s going to be great.”
