Mandella puts Beholder's first foal, Q B One, in training
Richard Mandella, who trained champion Beholder during a career comprised of 18 wins in 26 starts, has welcomed her first foal into his barn.
Breeder and owner Spendthrift Farm on Saturday published video of the Santa Anita Park-based Mandella with Q B One, who was fresh off the track from his first gallop.
The son of Uncle Mo is "a big, growing boy," Mandella said in the video. "He'll look better in a couple months, probably."
After winning the 2016 Breeders' Cup Distaff in a tight finish over Songbird, Beholder retired from racing. She earned Eclipse Awards as the the top 2-year-old filly of 2012, 3-year-old filly of 2013 and older dirt female of 2015 and 2016.
Nicknamed "Prince," her first foal received the official Q B One name as a nod to the "Queen," Beholder, as well as the moniker for a football team's starting quarterback. That was just one of more than 4,000 fan submissions Spendthrift received during a naming contest after the colt's birth.
As explained on the Spendthrift website: "They carry the team and are considered one of the most well-known positions in all of sports."
Beholder also has a yearling filly by Curlin and in January delivered her third foal, a War Front filly.
