Mandella Nominates Lucky Folie to Two Stakes

Richard Mandella has Lucky Folie nominated to both the $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes for two-year-old fillies at one mile on turf next Saturday, and the $70,000 Anoakia Stakes at six furlongs next Sunday.
Bred and owned by Wertheimer & Frere, the daughter of Distorted Humor won her only start, a 5 ½ furlong dash at Del Mar by 2 ¼ lengths on Sept. 6.
“I may run her in the Surfer Girl, or I could run her the next day in the sprint,” Mandella said.
Mandella also plans to enter Forest Chatter in next Monday’s Columbus Day feature, the $100,000 California Flag Handicap at about 6 ½ furlongs on turf. Part of the Golden State Series, the race is restricted to California-bred or sired horses age three and up.
By the Dixie Chatter sire Dixie Union, Forest Chatter’s grandmother is Phone Chatter, the champion two-year-old filly of 1993 who was trained by Mandella for the late Herman Sarkowsky, the breeder of Forest Chatter.
Sarkowsky, who also owned Grade I winners Dixie Chatter and Dixie Union, died in November of 2014.
 
SHERLOCK HAS FILLY IN TUNE FOR SURFER GIRL
Do the Dance, impressive front-running winner of a maiden allowance race at one mile on grass at Del Mar Sept. 7, will have to step up her game next Saturday when she runs in the $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes for two-year-old fillies at one mile on the turf.
“She’s a nice filly,” said Gary Sherlock, part owner and full-time trainer of the bay daughter of Discreet Cat.
“I was very surprised she won like she did at Del Mar (at odds of 13-1) because she was dead short . . . Hopefully, she’ll move forward next Saturday. She’ll have to; it’s a tough race.”
 

FINISH LINES: There is a two-day Pick Six carryover into Sunday of $170,368. The total pool should exceed $500,000 . . . After the race, she will remain in the United States under the care of trainer Simon Callaghan . . . Arriving Oct. 16 for the Grade II Twilight Derby at 1 1/8 miles on turf Oct. 24 will be Mister Brightside, trained by Jeremy Noseda and owned in part by retired champion jockey Walter Swinburn . . . Santa Anita will have special holiday racing next Monday, Oct. 12, Columbus Day. It will also be Dollar Day on track with beers, hot dogs and sodas available throughout the day at the bargain price of a buck apiece. The feature race will be the $100,000 California Flag Handicap for California-bred or sired horses, age three and up, at about 6 ½ furlongs on turf . . . Live racing resumes Thursday at 1 p.m. Santa Anita offers free Grandstand admission and free general parking every Thursday and Friday during the Autumn Meet.
