Mamdooha Shows Determination in Correction
One
day shy of a full year since her last appearance at the racetrack,
Mamdooha made her return off the lengthy layoff a winning one, capturing
her fifth straight victory in the 75th running of the $100,000 Correction on Saturday at Aqueduct Racetrack.
With jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the irons, Mamdooha broke alertly from post position 2 and settled in fifth, tracking an eager pacesetting Bridgehampton who led the field through spirited fractions of 22.87 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 46.05 for the half. Remaining on the lead heading for home, Bridgehampton began to tire at the eighth-pole, giving way to a fast closing duo in Mamdooha and Expression. Dueling right up until the finish with Expression, Mamdooh was able to get the last jump to secure the win by a nose.
"She's
a really nice filly," said Ortiz, Jr. "She came back from a layoff [of a
year] and she came ready today. She's won over a muddy track before, so
she handled the track pretty good and gave me run in the end; she's a
fighter. She felt the other horses as the wire got close and she wants
to win."
Returning
$12.40 for a $2 win wager, the 4-year-old Mamdooha, trained by Kiaran
McLaughlin, completed the six furlongs in 1:12.67 and increased her
career earnings to $290,000 in just six lifetime starts for owners
Shadwell Stable.
"Unbelievable,
she's a fighter of a racehorse; she knows where the wire is," commented
Art Magnuson, assistant trainer to McLaughlin. "She's done nothing
wrong; they did a great job in Florida to get her ready. Coming off the
year long layoff we would've been happy with a piece of anything so
we're absolutely pleased and now as an older filly going forward we feel
that we can compete."
Following Expression in second were Aireofdistinction, Vicki's Dancer, Isabelle, and Bridgehampton.
