Severe weather forced Turf Paradise and Fair Grounds to call off their Saturday cards with plans to bring back the races as drawn in the coming days.

Turf Paradise’s biggest racing card of the year was called off because of heavy rain that hit the Phoenix area.

“Because of inclement weather we have canceled Saturday racing,” a Turf Paradise post said Saturday on X. “Our apologies. Pending approval, we would like to reschedule for next Saturday.”

The Phoenix Gold Cup, Cotton Fitzsimmons Stakes, Turf Paradise Derby, Arizona Oaks and Queen of the Green Stakes, each worth $50,000 in added money, will be rescheduled for next weekend if the Arizona Racing Commission approves, according to Daily Racing Form.

Fair Grounds rescheduled its Saturday card for Tuesday, meaning the track’s 2024-25 season will close with an extra day of racing during a final week that runs through next Sunday.

“Saturday’s canceled card will be moved in its entirety to Tuesday, March 18,” the track said in a written notice. “First post at 12:45 p.m. CDT. We will conduct a six-day racing week culminating with the (Grade 2) Louisiana Derby day card on Saturday and closing day Sunday, March 23.”

Gale-force wind and a neighborhood power failure led to Saturday’s card being called off at Fair Grounds.
