Make it 25! Winx extends winning streak, matches Black Caviar
Winx raced Saturday, and so she made history.
The great Australian mare, who hasn’t lost in four years, matched one of her continent’s finest of all time in Black Caviar by running to a 25th straight win in Royal Randiwck’s Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
A 7-year-old daughter of Street Cry, she is seemingly reaching the end of her career at the races but continues delivering top performances. This time, she went last to first going 1 1/4 miles, pushed seven wide through the turn but across the wire without a challenge.
Winx is simply too good.
“She’s just an exceptional athlete," said jockey Hugh Bowman. "She creates so much attention. I’m just so elated and so proud to be a part of it. What can I say? I’m lost for words.”
Since running last out, connections announced there would be no trip to the famed Royal Ascot for the turf runner, who has won at just about every distance, over various grass goings. The world’s best can instead come to her.
Should the Chris Waller trainee continue on at the races, a run at an unprecedented fourth straight Cox Plate could be ahead. After all, when Winx races, she has a way with writing the record books. To be listed alongside of Black Caviar proves it.
"You don't imagine that," Bowman said. "...You don't dare to dream that big. It's just developed. It's like a relationship that's developed. She's continued to develop under Chris Waller's management, and his team."
