Louie Roussel III’s Major Gain, unhurried early, commenced a rally along the inside when set down for the drive, took command after the furlong marker and drew clear for a 2 1/2-length score in Friday’s Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots feature.

The $47,000 allowance affair was contested at about one mile over a Stall-Wilson Turf Course that was rated “good.” Trained as well as owned by Louie Roussel, the 4-year-old son of More Than Ready was ridden by Leandro Goncalves, toured the distance in 1:38.22 and increased his career earnings to $135,185 with his second win in 11 lifetime starts. The Kentucky-bred’s only other win came in the Grade III Arlington-Washington Futurity as a 2-year-old. He returned $8.20, $4.40 and $3.20 on Friday.

Pond Scum Racing and Robert Tuckers’ Hypothetical, who took command in the run down the backstretch and quickly drew off after alternating for early splits of 24.42 and 48.68, could not withstand the winner in the late stages but was clearly second-best finishing a length and a quarter to the good of Andrena Van Doren’s Parabellum.

Hypothetical paid 14.20 and $7, while Parabellum returned $2.60 in the show position.
