Main Sequence Breezes for Mac Diarmida
Main Sequence, the 2014 champion turf and older horse titlist, breezed an easy half-mile on turf at Palm Meadows Training Center Monday in preparation for his scheduled 2015 debut in Saturday’s $200,000 Mac Diarmida Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park.
The Flaxman Holdings homebred gelding worked in company with multiple-stakes winner Ring Weekend at Gulfstream’s satellite training facility in Palm Beach County. The Graham Motion-trained duo broke off together with Main Sequence on the outside and breezed as a team until late before the Breeders’ Cup champion drew away and galloped out strongly.
Main Sequence was timed in 50 seconds. Gainesway Farm’s Ring Weekend is slated to run in Saturday’s $150,000 Canadian Turf (G3) on a program that will feature eight stakes (seven graded).
Main Sequence was undefeated last year in four starts, all Grade 1 stakes, including the United Nations, Sword Dancer, Joe Hirsch Turf Classic and the Breeders’ Cup Turf, on his way to behind honored with two Eclipse Awards as North America’s champion older horse and male turf horse.
“He had a good work last week and we didn’t want to overdo it today, six days before the race,” Motion said. “I actually thought of working them on their own today, but I just thought they could work together. They’re both good work horses.”
Motion said he’s looking forward to saddling the son of Aldebaran for his 2015 racing season opener in the 1 3/8-mile Mac Diarmida.
"It’s very exciting. After winning two Eclipse Awards, you just want everything to go well,” Motion said. “It’s very exciting getting to this point. A lot of time goes into getting him here.”
