Mabroom Springs Turf Upset at Fair Grounds

Shadwell Farm’s Mabroom, always among the leaders, launched an explosive late kick in the final strides of Sunday’s featured $46,000 middle distance grass test for 3-year-old maidens to capture the day’s highlight by a neck.

The winner, ridden by Richard Eramia and trained by Danny Peitz, was overlooked in the wagering and returned long shot mutuels of $58.80, $26.20 and $12.20, toured the about 1 1/16-mile distance over the firm Stall-Wilson turf course in 1:46.43 and earned $27,600 in the first start of his career.

Bass Seeligson Partnership’s Unremitting, never far back, took command in mid-stretch, could not withstand the winner late but was clearly second best, paying $12.80 and $8.80 while finishing two lengths to the good of Raut LLC’s Vperyod Seroga, who returned $25.40 in the show spot.

Robert Evans and Doug Millard’s Mystic Legend made the pace with splits of 24.11 and 50.58 but weakened in the lane.

Racing resumes Wednesday at Fair Grounds with a nine-race program beginning at 12:40 p.m.
