Jockey Lugo suspended 30 days for failing to persevere at Gulfstream
Jockey Carlos Lugo was suspended 30 calendar days for failing to persevere in a race Sunday at Gulfstream Park, the track’s stewards announced in a press release on Friday.
The suspension will begin Monday.
Lugo was riding Princess Tereska in the day's fourth race, a $12,500 maiden-claimer going six furlongs. Princess Tereska and Lugo toiled in mid-pack before ultimately checking in fourth, “making no impact” as the Equibase chart notes.
Princess Tereska is trained by Juan Reviriego and is owned by Long Trail Stables. The winner of the race, Rubysa, is also trained by Reviriego and owned by Long Trail Stables.
Sade Purse was second with J D’s Vista in third.
Princess Tereska is the No. 5 horse in the video below.
Lugo is entered to ride two races Friday at Gulfstream, two Saturday and one on Sunday. He had won eight races out of 113 during the current Gulfstream Park meet.
Lugo has been riding since 2013. So far in 2021 he has $231,560 in earnings off of 200 starts with 10 wins, giving him a career total of $1,583,979.
The stewards said in the press release that they would continue investigating the race.
